Integrated Gambling and Debt Support

Addressing gambling debt in isolation — without also addressing the underlying gambling behaviour — is rarely effective long-term. Most specialist debt advice organisations have protocols for identifying clients with gambling problems and referring them to support services.

GamCare offers debt advice as part of its integrated support model, working with financial counsellors alongside gambling therapy. If you are dealing with both a gambling problem and significant debt, a combined approach — addressing both simultaneously — is typically more successful than treating them separately.

If you are in immediate financial crisis (at risk of eviction, unable to afford food or utilities), contact Citizens Advice or your local council first. Gambling-related debts, while serious, are generally unsecured and therefore lower priority than rent, mortgages, and utility bills in standard debt prioritisation frameworks.

Gambling Debt — Frequently Asked Questions

Can Citizens Advice help with gambling-related debt?
Yes. Citizens Advice offers free, impartial debt advice and can help with gambling-related debt in the same way as other unsecured debt — including credit cards, loans, and overdrafts accumulated through gambling. Advisers can help you understand your options, including debt management plans (DMPs), individual voluntary arrangements (IVAs), debt relief orders (DROs), and bankruptcy. They will not judge you and are trained to work with clients whose debt has arisen from addiction or gambling disorder.
Should I address my gambling problem and debt at the same time?
Yes — addressing both simultaneously is strongly recommended by specialist services. Dealing with debt without addressing the underlying gambling problem means debt is likely to recur. Dealing with gambling without addressing debt leaves significant financial anxiety that can trigger relapse. GamCare integrates debt support within its treatment programmes, and many debt advisers have experience with gambling-related cases and can refer to gambling support services. If you are not sure where to start, the GamCare helpline (0808 8020 133) can assess both gambling and financial aspects together.
What are the best free debt services for gambling debts in the UK?
The main free UK debt services are: Citizens Advice (0800 144 8848) — generalist debt advice, local offices, online and telephone; StepChange (0800 138 1111) — specialist debt charity offering debt management plans, IVAs, and debt relief orders; MoneyHelper (0800 138 7777) — government-backed service from the Money and Pensions Service, including a debt adviser directory; National Debtline (0808 808 4000) — telephone and online self-help debt advice. All are free and confidential.
Are gambling debts treated differently to other types of debt?
Legally, most gambling debts are treated as unsecured consumer debt — credit card balances, personal loans, or overdrafts. In England, Wales, and Scotland, pure gambling debts (money owed directly to a bookmaker or casino) are generally enforceable since the Gambling Act 2005. Gambling-related debt accumulated through credit cards is standard consumer debt and follows normal debt management and insolvency processes. Being honest with debt advisers about the source of debt allows them to recommend the most appropriate solution.
What if I am in immediate financial crisis due to gambling?
If you are in immediate financial crisis — unable to pay rent, mortgage, utilities, or food — contact Citizens Advice or your local council as the first priority. Emergency grants may be available through your local council or charitable funds. The Trussell Trust food bank network can provide immediate food assistance. Gambling-related debts, while serious, are unsecured and generally lower priority than housing costs and utilities in standard debt prioritisation frameworks. Once immediate needs are stabilised, address the gambling problem and remaining debt with specialist support.
